Home base for this trip is in Ålesund, a charming little town built on rocks that protrude into the sea. From there, we’ll begin our motorcycle tour with a visit to the island of Runde via an easy ride along the coast and a refreshing boat ride. The small land mass is home to half a million seabirds. Hiking up the bird-festooned rock, you will hear the noise of 500,000 birds the entire time!
The next day’s highlight is the legendary Geiranger Fjord. The road that winds down to the water and swirls up again is just as spectacular as the fjord itself, a view captured on postcards seen at curio shops all over the country. Lucky us, we’ll take a boat ride through the Geiranger! The following day we’ll climb up the Troll’s Ladder, Norway’s most famous, and one of Europe’s most extreme mountain passes. With eight storm-lashed bridges connecting 17 islands, this path is reminiscent of the Florida Keys’ strand of over-water highways. This loop takes us to the wind-torn islands and on to Kristiansund.
No fewer than ten fjords are on our last day’s schedule. This final jaunt is marked by countless sweeping turns as memorable as the pristine views of nature, steep mountains above, and crystal-clear water below. At the end of this week there is no dark night, but a bright farewell evening, as the sun never sets on Norway’s horizon.
