RTS1902 Rom to Sicily

Freitag, 17. Mai 2019 | Michaela Achatzi / Angela | Europa / Italien

Our last riding day of the 'Rome to Sicily' tour took us from Agricento to Catania. Unfortunately we got rained on half of the day and so we weren't getting many pictures to show you here on the blog.

As if he wanted to show off on us, Mount Etna the next morning presented himself in all his beauty

Your tour guides Angela and Michaela would like to say thank you for a great tour and the fabulous time we spent exploring the south of Italy with our Ducatis !!

Safe travels back home. We are very much looking forward to seeing you again on the road, riding other parts of our beautiful globe.

Cefalú to Agrigento

Peter and Dennis have seen enough ruins and fortresses.
..... waiting ....
...... but Steven goes up to the fortress Caccamo

Edelweiss guests meet locals
And talk in italienenglish
Parking lot in the forest for the second picnic on tour
Preparing the picnic, Angela got some support from the local wood workers
Perry we miss you !!!
A lot of calories

Taormina to Cefalú

The same procedure very day
Cefalú a beautiful town

Restday -Taormina

Steven going up to the ruins
Mount Ätna 3340 m hight.
Spectacular snow cover in mai
The Second biggest antic greek amphi theater of sicily
For a restday not so bad

Parghelia to Taormina

The last day into Calabrian-Sicily waiting for as.

In Villa S. Giovanni we take the ferry to cross the “stretto du Messina”

We leave Tropea to the south
In the small town of Scilla we stopped for lunch and an interesting lesson in Greek mythology ...
... legend has it that the saying "between Scylla and Charybdis" has its origins in this town
Whether or not there is a grain of truth in this story, we enjoy a tasty seafood lunch with a nice view
Sicily is already within reach
The mountains of Sicily turn out to be a real nice riding gem
The mountains are dotted with numerous of these perched villages. We stopped in one of them called Novara di Sicilia.
In some of the alleys you get the impression that time has stood still
People here really need to be inventive concerning the parking of their vehicles
It was pretty quiet for a "mother's day" in Novara. And then we happened to bump into a man's wood workshop. He had some really interesting pieces to look at. Very interesting hairdo Mr. Trump
Our fearless Ducati knights - Steve, Perry, Pete and Dennis

Acquafredda to Parghelia

A spectacular start into the day by riding the hairpin turns up to the Christo Redentore statue. Along the way this little town called Fiumefreddo Bruzio is another temptation to be tackled when you see it located high up on a cliff and a couple of hairpin turns leading up to it. Too tempting not to be visited, even for Angela, the van driver of the day

The streets of Fiumefreddo Bruzio ...
... with a statue ...
A couple of 180 art pictures in Diamante
... and a spectacular view as a reward. (Not to mention the always delicious Espresso )
Il Rendentore
The little brother of Rio de Janeiro.
A dream
The weather is perfect
The view is fantastic.
Hmm... Pete is wondering in which town we'll end up today

Pompei to Acquafredda

After Pompei, our route leads us on to Acquafredda. A beautiful, typical Italian boutique hotel is waiting there for us. First thing in the morning we paid visit to the Greek temples of Paestum. Our award for the walk through the 2.500 years old temple ruins was Michaela's picnic at the place where the buffaloes are raised and the tasty mozzarella is produced from their milk.

A delicious picnic prepared by Michaela.

Rest day in Pompei

Even though it was only the second day of our Rome to Sicily tour, everybody decided to have a real rest day. The ruins of Pompei are simply too spectacular to not go and have an extensive visit.

In the afternoon Domenico, our tour guide colleague was showing us around in his home town of Naples. What a great time we had! Thanks Domenico for showing us your home town.

Perry, Steve and Angela on ancient roads
The whole place is divided up into sections to make it easier for you to find your way around.
Man !!! After having walked the streets of Pompei for hours, you never again complain about bumpy streets
Lots of statues to be found here as well - some of them are new, some of them are replicas
The interesting technique the Romans used to construct part of the buildings
Fantastic mosaics ...
... and also frescoes.
A Paradies in the middle of Pompei
We started our walking tour of Naples at the Castle near the port
Enjoy the moment!
In the streets of downtown Naples
Efficient parking
We have seen Naples now from almost all sides, but the Vesuvio in the background wouldn't show up

Rome to Pompei

The first riding day leaving the busy city of Rome first took us to a view point from where we could see the former summer residence of the pope. All the way down to the famous historical site of Pompei we enjoyed nice rides in bright sunshine.

On our rest day tomorrow we will get to wander about Pompei and learn more about the once prosperous city, whose existence has been put to an end by the volcanic eruption of mount Etna.

Happy Birthday Dennis!!!
Lunchtime at the sea in Sperlonga
Steven, Dennis, Peter and Perry
Albaner Lake and behind the " Flat" of the pope
Best weather to start with the motorcycles.

Welcome in Rom

In Rome we turned around the motorcycles that were coming up with the tour from Sicily and started another tour back down to Sicily.

This time tour guides Michaela and Angela are showing four riders from the USA around the Italian boot and the island of Sicily.

The bikes are ready to go!

Angela and Michaela: Thanks again for guiding the four of us through Southern Italy and Sicily, and especially for getting us through the complicated toll booths! The photos on the blog capture the beauty of the landscape and the many historic sites of the area, and showed the great time we had together. I look forward to going back some day and retracing some of our route and tackling Mount Etna - weather permitting, and of course enjoying espresso, pizza, and buffalo gelato! All the best, Steve
