Adventure Big Five ABF2201

Mittwoch, 10. August 2022 | Domenico Schiano Moriello | Afrika

Welcome to Cape Town!

The Adventure Big Five finally starts again after two years of "break" due to the pandemic! This beautiful tour will take us in two weeks from the southern tip of Africa to almost its heart, the wonderful Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe! Sea, desert, steppe, forest, wild animals ... this and much more awaits us in the coming days! We can't wait to leave, stay tuned!

A walk in the Waterfront, always worth it even after a very long travel from Europe!

Cape Town to Citrusdal

Let's go! We quickly left Cape Town this morning and followed the coast to the town of Table View for a great group photo. Crossing the Durbanville area with its vineyards we then arrived in Paarl where we visited the impressive Monument of the Afrikaans language and relaxed a bit before tackling the many curves of the Bainskloof Pass, one of the most beautiful roads in the region. After a quick lunch in Ceres, the last "challenge" was the twenty (beautiful) kilometers of dirt road of the Middelberg Pass. Arrived in Ceres in time for some relaxation before dinner!

Lass uns gehen!

Citrusdal to Springbok

The longest ride so far! Around 470 Kilometres to reach Springbok, our last stop in South Africa. In the morning a wonderful gravel road through orange plantations (the name Citrusdal wasn0t given by accident!) took us to Clanwillian where we could enjoy a nice coffee break. Back on the motorcycles, we quickly reached the coast again at Lamberts Bay, took some pictures and then, back on gravel, we headed to Vredendal where we stopped for lunch. After that, Springbok was still far, but the only way to get there is to use the highway... so it didn't take too long!

Springbok to Canyon Village (Namibia)

Time to enter Namibia, after having crossed South Africa from south to north! Leaving Springbok we used the N7 road (Cape-Namibia route) and after around one hour we reached the border. After passport controls, custom controls and so on... we were finally in Namibia, where we are going to spend one week! A quick stop right after the border and soon we left the paved road and entered the protected area of Ai-Ais and Fish River Canyon. Words can't describe the vastity of the sceneries, hopefully the pictures will! We reached the "oasis" of Ai-Ais for a well deserved coffee break and then finally headed to Canyon Village, in time to enjoy the sunset in the desert! And, as soon as the Sun goes down, the temperature drops down, so back in the lodge for a tasty dinner!

Canyon Village to Keetmanshoop

We starded our engines on a very chilly morgen to go admire one of the higlights of this tour, the breathtaking Fish RIver Canyon, the second biggest canyon in the world! We spent more than one hour there, riding from one viewpoint to another, and then finally reached the beautiful Canyon Roadhouse lodge where we stopped for lunch. Today we didn't have many kilometres ahead of us, so we took it easy! Another stop at the Naute dam, for a coffee and a cake and of course some pictures... and then we finally reached Keetmanshoop where our lodge is located next to the gas station. Our tanks are now full and the bikes are ready for tomorrow!

Keetmanshoop to Mariental

Did I write yesterday that the morning was chilly? Well today even more chilly! We left Keetmanshoop perfectly in time (german motorcyclists!) and headed to the Giant's Playground and Quivertree Forest where, after admiring these incredible rock formations, we also enjoyed a coffee and tried to become friends with a cheetah! After that, a long straight road took us to Mariental where we had a quick lunch and then went to visit Namibia's biggest Dam, the Hardap dam, that gave a big boost to the agriculture and therefore the economy of the whole region. We finally reached the entrance to our beautiful lodge in the Kalahari desert... so to reach it we had to ride the last three kilometres on sand! But it was worth it!

Mariental to Namib Naukluft

After leaving our lodge we rode back to Mariental and then to Maltahoehe, where we had an early lunch and then hit the gravel again! We reached the Zarishoogte Pass and then finally reached the Namib-Naukluft park. Our lodge is located in the middle of nowhere, and the sunset and the stars above us are simply marvellous!

Rest day jeep tour to Sossusvlei

Rest day program: breakfast at 6am, departure at 6:30 am (when the sun is not yet out and it's sooo cold!), visit the Sossusvlei area of the Namib desert with its wonderful dunes, and the Sesriem canyon. Today we didn't use our bikes, that could rest in the lodge. Enjoy the pictures!

Namib Naukluft to Swakopmund

Another long day on Namibia's gravel roads! After around 230 kilometres of "white roads", crossing the tropic of Capricorn, and the Gaub and Kuiseb canyons, we finally reached the tar road again in Walvis Bay, where we stopped for a light lunch and some pictures with the many flamingos that live here. Swakopmund wasn't far anymore, a beautiful ride along the coast between the ocean and the desert took us to this former german colony... and tonight of course we'll go to a german restaurant!

Swakopmund to Windhoek

A long and mostly straight asphalt road connects Swakopmund and Windhoek, that doesn't sound very exciting but inbetween there is Spitzkoppe, the "Matterhorn of Namibia" one of the most beautiful landmarks of this country! Enjoy the pictures!!!

Windhoek to Ghanzi (Botswana)

Not many pictures today! It was the longest ride of the tour, around 530 km and one border control, but we finally made it and now we are in Botswana!

Another country on the list!

Ghanzi to Maun

Another long and straight stretch of road in Botswana! Finally we are in Maun, the gateway to the Okavango delta. We reached our lodge in time for lunch and, in the afternoon, some time to rest, tomorrow it's going to be a long day!

Rest day jeep safari in the Okavango Delta

Today we went for a long jeep tour in the Okavango Delta! Departure at 6am... and we came back at 6pm! Quite a long stretch to the entrance of the Moremi Game reserve, but the effort was worth it! So many animals, a lot of zebras, giraffes and elephants and, above all, we also saw an animal that is very difficult to spot, a leopard!

Maun to Nata

Two warnings for today, scan the road surface for possible potholes and beware of animals! We left Maun half an hour later than normal time and headed to Gweta, where we stopped for lunch in the beautiful Planet Baobab lodge. Why they have chosen this name for the lodge is very easy to understand... so many of these beautiful and huge trees around! And the last 100 kilometres were straight but we had to do some curves to avoid the potholes!!!

Elephants crossing happens often!

Nata to Kasane

Today's route was so straight that the road is also used as an emergency landing strip! But we had to take it easy, also this area is densely populated by animals! One picture stop, a quick lunch and soon after that we reached Kasane, where an incredible boat safari on the Chobe river was awaiting us! Incredible the amount and concentration of animals on the river banks and on the island in the middle of it, where many animals take it easy because it's very difficult for predators to get there! After admiring the sunset from the boat, back to our lodge, dinner and soon in bed, tomorrow we will reach Victoria Falls!

We were very brave and took a picture despite the warning sign!

Kasane to Victoria Falls

Last day of the tour and first day without motorcycle, today we went by bus to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, so another country on your list! The border crossing took some time because almost every tourist entering here needs to "buy" a visa, so there was quite a long line, but we reached our final destination in time for lunch and then went to visit the Mosi-oa-Tunya (local name)/Victoria Falls, the world's greatest sheet of falling water! What an impressive site! The Zambezi River, which is more than 2 km wide at this point, plunges noisily down a series of basalt gorges and raises an iridescent mist that can be seen from very far away. Around sunset we came back to the hotel, then dinner and then... time to say goodbye. See you on another Edelweiss tour... for me it will be very soon because somehow the bikes have to go back to Cape Town... how will they get there? Stay connected!!

In Verbindung bleiben!!
