MCT2401 Morocco Tour
Our journey to Morocco begins in the south of Spain. From Malaga, we ride straight to the ferry port to cross over to the African continent. Once we've arrived there, however, we will still be on Spanish territory. The border with Morocco is just beyond the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. Our first stop after we entered Morocco is a coffee place and a cash machine. After all, you want to be able to pay for your coffee, don't you ;) Then it's time to continue to Chefchaouen. After all, we want to stroll around the town a bit.
After our departure from Chefchaouen, first we were being led through a green valley with nice winding roads. Lunch was next to a Roman settlement, volubilis. in the afternoon we went through a large agricultural area. Finishing the day in a skiing area in a beautiful and warm hotel
Today the ride was supposed to take us through the cedar woods and to the monkeys. Despite the sun that was slowly coming throug the clouds, it was still too cold in the morning to dry up the forest roads from the rain the day before. So we rode up to where the monkeys usually are swinging from tree to tree. But apparently today they were still sleeping at around nine o'clock. At least we took some pictures of the cedar trees before we continued the main roads towards Khenifra. A very delicious tagine lunch gave us the strength to finalize the day's ride to Bin el Ouidane through the neck of the woods.
A lovely relaxing riding to with several highlights: waterfalls, great roads and an area were it looks as if time has stood still.
We're Marrakeched-out and ready to ride again. Our route will lead us over the high Atlas mountains, and past the remnants of historical Morocco south of the mountain range. We will visit an old Kashbah that has once been the glorious palace of the ruler over the Berber people in the south. Ait Benhaddou is another interesting sight along our way through this beautiful mountain area. We also still could see the damages last year's earthquake did to some of the buildings here. In Ouarzazate we found our lovely hotel for the night.
Everyone was already very excited - today we are going to end up in Morocco's part of the Sahara desert - the Erg Chebbi. In the morning, though, we went once more into another gorge of the Moroccan Atlas mountains - the Gorge du Thodra. After Jan has treated us to a delicious picnic lunch, we continued our route, the landscape turned more and more into a wide-open and arid desert region.
Still a bit sleepy after our great drum session at the fireplace yesterday evening, we were gently "rocking" back to our hotel. Another good opportunity to relish the desert's peacefull silence.
