Mystery Tour 2026

Some of us had already been in Madrid for a few days, but the tour officially started today. We gathered at the hotel for a short briefing. Naturally, we were all hoping that Rainer might drop a few hints about where we would be heading, but so far all we know is that we're travelling north. He promised the briefing wouldn't take more than an hour. It was a good effort, but those who know him will probably have guessed that he didn't quite manage to keep it within that time frame. That said, it was very entertaining. He began by introducing each of us, sharing a brief story about how he had met us individually. It made for a great and very personal introduction. Afterwards, we moved on to information about the tour itself, which was, as expected, fairly limited. We learned that getting lost is not recommended, but more importantly, that we're guaranteed to have an amazing time, see incredible places, and enjoy some excellent food. There was even a subtle hint that a little cava might make an appearance somewhere along the way. Following the briefing, we received the keys to our bikes and headed out for dinner. We ended up at a lovely little restaurant serving Spanish takes on international dishes. There was Spanish-style sushi, Spanish tacos, and plenty of other delicious snacks to enjoy. After Dinner, we had as quick trip to the airport to pick up the last piece of luggage. Very glad we now all have our stuff and can ride together ! All in all, it was a great way to start our trip together. Let's see what the rest of the journey has in store for us!
Our first riding day – let's see where this journey takes us! To start the day, we first had to make our way out of the town we were staying in, Alcala de Henares, more or less a suburb of Madrid. There was a bit of traffic to contend with, but before long we had left it behind and were out on the open roads. Rainer had teased us the day before by saying that one of the ways he would make sure we hadn't ridden these roads before was by taking us everywhere on the highway. At least today, that wasn't the case. Instead, we were treated to some beautiful twisty roads that made for a fantastic start to the tour. Our first stop was in Patones de Arriba, a beautifully restored village where we could wander through the narrow streets and admire the stunning stone buildings. They call it the "Black Village" because many of the buildings are constructed from the dark slate found in the surrounding area. Since we arrived a little early by Spanish standards, the local cafés were still quiet, so coffee was served from the support van instead. Not quite an oat milk café, but it did the job perfectly. Then it was back on the bikes and onwards towards lunch, eager to see what else the day had in store for us. Lunch was served at a cycling centre, so naturally I was hoping we would swap our motorcycles for bicycles for the afternoon. I'm fairly certain I was the only one excited by that idea, though. After lunch, we headed deeper into the mountains and forests, enjoying mile after mile of fantastic riding roads. The scenery kept changing, but the quality of the roads remained consistently excellent. By the afternoon, we arrived in Segovia, our destination for the day. This evening we'll explore the city on a short walking tour, enjoy another great dinner together, and afterwards take a look at the city's famous aqueduct. If the rest of the trip is anything like today, we're in for something special. A start like this promises to make for a great adventure.
Our second riding day took us from Segovia to Ávila, another beautiful ancient city. We thought the first hurdle would be finding our way through the tiny streets of Segovia, but it turned out we already struggled with getting out of the car park. After a while, and with some good suggestions from Charly, we managed to figure it out and were on our way. We made a quick stop just outside the city to marvel at the castle, and then headed towards Valle de los Caídos, home to the tallest cross in the world. Beneath the cross is a huge cathedral that was dug directly into the rock. It is very impressive to walk through and admire this amazing piece of work, which must have been incredibly labour-intensive to build. Lunch was at a wonderful little restaurant that actually belongs to a vineyard. Of course, we couldn't try any of the wines during the day's ride, but it gives us a good excuse to sample some of the local wines now that we have arrived at our hotel. After lunch, the road climbed into the mountains to over 1,800 metres. For about 25 kilometres, we enjoyed an amazingly twisty road without seeing a single car or motorcycle. Having this little piece of paradise all to ourselves was something special. Now that we are in Ávila, we will take a closer look at the city walls, climb to the top, and see what the view is like from up there.
It was time for our third riding day. During the morning briefing, Rainer announced that we had seen enough old stones for now, so it was time for something different. We left the city of Ávila, following the ancient city walls as we headed towards the Sierra de Gredos. The morning air was refreshingly cool, a welcome change after the heat of the previous afternoons. We climbed into the mountains, enjoying a series of fantastic twisty roads. Traffic was practically nonexistent, leaving us free to focus on the ride and the stunning scenery around us. We honestly don't know where Rainer keeps finding these hidden gems of roads, but we're certainly not complaining. As long as we get to ride them, he can keep them coming. One of the highlights of the morning was the ascent to Puerto de la Peña Negra. The pass offered breathtaking views across the valley below, while the surrounding peaks still carried patches of snow, a beautiful contrast to the warm temperatures we'd been experiencing. Descending into the valley, we made good progress towards our lunch stop, where we were once again treated to excellent Spanish cuisine. Some opted for fish, others chose pork, and naturally we finished the meal with postres—Spanish desserts. The afternoon brought more twisty roads before we eventually joined the highway for the final stretch to the hotel. Apparently, an evening program had been planned, so the goal was to arrive early enough to enjoy the hotel. The hotel has a whole load of history one being that Christopher Columbus would have spent a night here before he sailed of to America, back then it was still a monastary. Upon arrival, we raised a glass to celebrate our birthday girl. Happy Birthday, Valerie! As for the evening program, it seemed to involve two of Spain's greatest pleasures: wine and food. What could possibly go wrong?
After a bit of a slow morning, it was time to leave the vineyard again. Even though we were told we’d be heading north, as usual we ended up going west today and eventually crossed the border into Portugal. The ride started on a relatively wide road, but it didn’t take long before it narrowed down and got much more twisty. A bit bumpy if you’re on a Harley with 6 cm of suspension travel, but nothing that could ruin the fun. We crossed a river over a huge dam, which also marks the border. On one side of the valley is Spain, on the other Portugal — pretty surreal just riding across it like that. Since we were making really good time, we would’ve arrived early for lunch, so we added a little extra loop through some incredible roads with absolutely stunning views. Lunch was at a small place that completely exceeded expectations. The food and preparation were outstanding — burrata, crackers with ham and mushrooms, beef, pork… basically something for everyone, and all of it really well done. After lunch we made our way to the hotel, and luckily arrived a bit earlier, which turned out to be perfect because it’s a very special place. The rooms are all very spacious and look out over the valley. With sunshine now and a promised sunset later, it’s hard to imagine a better view. The infinity pool was the perfect spot to sit back and talk about how amazing the trip has been so far. Can’t wait to see what else is coming.
Today we leave the gorgeous Pedra Pura resort near Chaves. We enjoyed a fantastic sunset over dinner last night, but it's time to move on. Rainer woke up "under a rock" this morning, after joking yesterday that we'd all be sleeping under rocks. Thankfully, that wasn't quite the case, the rooms were absolutely stunning and incredibly comfortable. During the morning briefing, Rainer mentioned that we'd be seeing a church and tackling plenty of twists and turns. He also joked that if lunch wasn't good, we could shout at the chef. That's certainly not something you hear every day! Off we went, and he wasn't exaggerating; it was curvy... very curvy. Temperatures were already climbing by the time we reached the coffee stop after what felt like an endless series of perfect bends on immaculate asphalt. After a quick look at the local church, it was back to more corners and sweeping mountain roads. As we climbed higher, the temperatures dropped slightly while the views became even more spectacular. An incredible mountain road took us all the way to the summit, where another church awaited us, along with a surprise Edelweiss picnic prepared by Lars. After filling our stomachs with what was, for once, a relatively light lunch, we headed back down and onto yet another fantastic mountain road. Endless curves, no traffic, and breathtaking scenery, it was absolute motorcyclist heaven. Our arrival at the Lavandeira Douro Hotel was just as spectacular. A long driveway winding through the vineyards led us to a beautiful property with a fantastic pool and excellent rooms. Rainer announced that we'd be staying here for two nights. Now we're excited to see what he has planned next—we can't wait to find out!
Today was a rest day, which meant we could take things a little easier and enjoy a slower start to the morning. Of course, it probably helped that a few glasses of wine and Port the night before had us sitting around sharing travel stories well into the evening. We talked about some of our favourite places in the world to ride a motorcycle and swapped stories from past adventures, including mountain passes in India that were completely blocked by snow years ago. Even though today was a shorter riding day, we certainly didn't miss out on the curves. The route took us along beautiful winding roads through vineyards and alongside rivers, offering plenty of opportunities to enjoy the scenery and the ride. At lunch, the kitchen staff seemed to be a bit more efficient than the waiting staff. The steaks were excellent, but getting the food and drinks to everyone took a little longer than expected. Still, those little moments often become the stories we remember most, so it was all part of the experience. After lunch, there were still plenty of great roads ahead before we arrived back at our hotel, where there was time to relax by the pool and enjoy the other amenities of this beautiful place. And later tonight? A wine tasting followed by a BBQ dinner. Sshhh Don't tell anyone—not everybody knows!
Today it was time again to leave the vineyard and the beautiful pool behind. In the morning it was a little rainy, so at least we didn’t bring our rain gear for no reason. It was still warm and the rain was very light, so it was not a big issue. We had a photo stop on top of a hill with a little tower viewpoint, giving us some beautiful views of the area. Apparently the cattle here also know about this viewpoint, because they were blocking the way up while we were coming down. During our coffee stop, Philippe’s motorcycle got a little lonely, so it used its alarm to draw attention and kept screaming until Philippe and Emmanuelle came back from the little church in town. We were warned about today’s ride, because we were told it would be many kilometers and a lot of turns. Then afterwards we would be sleeping in a mountain hut, so after being pampered for two days, things would become a little more simple. At least part of that was true, because boy did we have a lot of curves today. Basically no noteworthy traffic and smooth asphalt with curves all around. After lunch it started to become warm again, so it was really nice that we had a lot of elevation today. The last part of our ride took us through a national park with high peaks. This is also where we will spend our time riding tomorrow. Once we got to the hotel, it turned out Rainer wasn’t completely honest, because it is far from a simple mountain hut. We are high up, and all the rooms overlook the valley in front of us. The restaurant has glass panels from floor to ceiling on three sides, giving amazing views of the surrounding area. A truly stunning place. The road directly down from the hotel is closed, so we will need to make a bit of a detour tomorrow. The routes have been re-planned, so now it’s a bit of a mystery for Rainer as well.
Today was another rest day, and we’re staying in the beautiful Serra da Estrela National Park. According to Rainer, this region is a motorcyclist’s paradise, and we were sure he would do his best to prove it on today’s ride. Some of our guests chose to take a day off the bike and explore the area around our wonderful hotel. Ingrid, Gottfried, and Walter headed out for a hike, while Mauricio and Valerie took full advantage of the hotel spa. Given what an amazing place it is, we’re sure they had a fantastic time. Most of the group joined Rainer for the ride. We started by descending the mountain on the fantastic road we had ridden up the day before. A weather inversion had settled over the region, leaving the valleys blanketed in clouds while the skies above remained perfectly clear. The views from above the cloud layer were simply spectacular. Once back in the valley, Rainer led us up and over the mountains again towards Manteigas, with a short coffee stop along the way. The winding roads seemed endless, offering curve after curve throughout the day, while the pleasant temperatures made for ideal riding conditions. For lunch, we stopped at a local restaurant in Loriga, where we enjoyed a delicious selection of duck, cod, and pork dishes. Every meal was excellent and a perfect example of the region’s hospitality and cuisine. After lunch, it was a short ride back up the mountain to our hotel, leaving plenty of time for everyone to relax and enjoy the surroundings. Emmanuelle and Philippe were spotted exploring the area on foot and taking in the stunning views, while a few of the tour guides made the most of the afternoon with a bicycle ride. As the day drew to a close, everyone gathered on the hotel terrace for drinks, enjoying the breathtaking scenery and reflecting on another wonderful day in Serra da Estrela.
This morning, Rainer announced that he was stealing an hour from us after giving us one back a few days ago. That could only mean one thing: we were heading back to Spain. We had to return at some point anyway, as some of our luggage was still waiting for us at the starting hotel. Today would be a longer riding day, with 313 km ahead of us. The route would continue through the winding roads of the Serra da Estrela, a mountain range we have been enjoying for several days now. Lars set off a little earlier than the rest of us to capture some drone footage. We can't wait to see how those shots turn out. At 8:30, we climbed onto our bikes and headed down towards the valley. Before reaching it, however, we turned toward Torre, the highest point on mainland Portugal and home to the country's only ski resort. Did you know Portugal has a ski resort? Neither did many of us. The climb rewarded us with incredible views, fantastic roads, and endless corners. We stopped at the top to soak in the scenery before beginning our descent toward the Spanish border. Before crossing into Spain, we made one final coffee stop in Sortelha, a charming medieval village perched on a hilltop. The town was still quiet when we arrived, giving us the chance to enjoy a peaceful stroll through its narrow streets. There was time for a coffee—and, given the rising temperatures, an ice cream as well. Not long after leaving Sortelha, we reached the border. Marked only by a small river, it's so subtle that you could easily cross without realizing you've entered another country. We were now riding through Extremadura, where the landscape gradually changed from lush green hills to drier, sun-baked terrain. The temperature continued to climb. Lunch was served at a traditional Spanish restaurant, where we enjoyed a fresh salad followed by a classic seafood paella. Refueled and ready to go, we set off again for the final stretch. The next hour and a half was spent riding through the heat toward our hotel. As we approached our destination, Rainer offered an alternative route for anyone eager for a few more mountain curves before calling it a day. Several guests happily joined him, while others chose a different reward: a refreshing dip in the pool and a cold beer waiting back at the hotel. Earlier that morning, Rainer had reminded everyone that their homework was due before dinner: a selfie with a local, a photo of a flower, and the solution to a riddle he had created to reveal the destination of the next mystery tour. We were all curious to see who had completed the assignment correctly, and whether Rainer would actually reveal the location. One thing is certain: tonight's dinner promises to be an entertaining one.
Our penultimate day was also the longest, as we covered around 360 kilometers today. We started the morning with a stretch of highway to make some progress, but it quickly gave way to the beautiful, twisty roads of Monfragüe National Park. We made a quick stop at Salto del Gitano, which is known as one of the best birdwatching spots in Europe. Our main stop of the day was in Guadalupe, where we sat down for lunch and had the chance to walk around a little, as well as visit the Royal Monastery of Santa María de Guadalupe. It's a huge building, so the long name seems quite appropriate. By this time, it was really starting to warm up, and once we got back on the road, we could definitely feel the heat. By the time we stopped for coffee, everyone was happy to sit in the shade for a while and enjoy an ice cream before tackling the final stretch of the day. Even though the dashboard temperature reached 38°C, it was still an enjoyable ride because the scenery was beautiful from start to finish. We have now arrived in Toledo, where our hotel overlooks the city. For dinner, we'll head into the old town so we can experience it up close. Then tomorrow comes the final day of the tour.
Today marked the final riding day of our Mystery Tour, and for the first time all week, we actually knew exactly where we were heading: back to our first hotel in Alcalá de Henares. Another hot day was on the horizon, so everyone made sure to stock up on plenty of water before we set off a little later than usual. After all, dinner in downtown Toledo had turned into a long, enjoyable evening. Perfectly normal by Spanish standards, but for some of us, getting back after midnight made for a slightly slower start! Our first stop was the Royal Spring Residence in Aranjuez, followed by a well-earned coffee break in Chinchón. As we arrived, preparations for the famous bullring on the town's main square were already underway. By then, temperatures had climbed well above 30°C, but that didn't stop us from enjoying another fantastic day on the road. Rainer had warned us that the route wouldn't be as twisty since we'd left the mountains behind. Of course, he still managed to find plenty of sweeping curves and enjoyable corners, giving everyone one last chance to savour the ride. After a group photo and a relaxed lunch, it was time for the final hour back to Alcalá de Henares, where we returned the bikes and officially completed another unforgettable adventure. To celebrate the end of the tour, we enjoyed a wonderful farewell dinner at an exquisite restaurant personally selected by Rainer—a perfect ending to an incredible journey through Spain and Portugal. Many of our guests had travelled extensively through Spain before, yet everyone agreed they had discovered places, roads, and experiences they had never seen before. That's exactly what makes the Mystery Tour so special. A huge thank you to everyone who joined us and made this another truly epic adventure. We already can't wait for the next Mystery Tour in two years. Who knows what Rainer has planned next? See you soon on the next tour!
