Get your motorcycle ready for the 2016 riding season - So startest du richtig in die Motorradsaison 2016

If you live in a warm place and are able to ride your bike year-round you don’t need to read this. But if a cold winter interrupts your season year after year you probably know what the best day of the year feels like: the day of awakening, when your bike finally quits hibernating and you take it out into the sunlight. It feels incredibly good!

Prior to putting your bike away for winter you should of course work on it; just taking the key and leaving the bike to fend for itself all winter will result in problems and delays come spring. Washing and cleaning it, getting necessary maintenance done, and taking the battery out are among the things that need to be done. We will tell you everything about that in due time.

Modern “intelligent” charging devices allow to be connected to a vehicle’s battery all winter. If your battery did not enjoy this generous treatment you need to charge it before reconnecting it to your bike. This requires a suitable charger, and if your battery is not maintenance-free don’t forget to remove the little yellow plugs that seal the battery cells so it can outgas during the charging process. Check the acid level and adjust if necessary; use only purified water, never fill up tap water or battery acid! Never, ever open up a maintenance-free battery!

Reinstall the battery by connecting the positive (“+”) terminal first, the negative (“-“) second. Pole grease keeps the connections from corroding; apply it once the terminals are connected, not before, or you will create an unwanted isolation. Make sure the vent tube is attached firmly and not kinked or obstructed; acid leaking from the battery will damage surfaces beyond repair.

If your bike still has a fuel tap you can open it now and check the carb(s) and hoses for leaks. Fuel, oil, brake and radiator fluid should never leak anywhere; air from the tires shouldn’t either but usually does over the course of those long winter months, so you probably have to adjust tire pressure. While you’re down there where the tires are you might as well check them for fissures, cracks and other flaws as well as tread depth. The drive chain should be adjusted and well greased, but if it’s not this would be the time to do it. Don’t forget the electrical system and check lights and turn signals front and rear as well as horn and switches. And last but not least let’s have a close look at the brakes, pads and discs, before checking them for function, preferably while pushing the bike, not while riding it. Do the pads “bite” properly and, just as important, do they let go again after you release the lever? Check if the wheels turn freely.

Check the lights
Lichter checken nicht vergessen

Once all boxes are checked we can proceed to waking up the engine. Put transmission in neutral, turn ignition on and fire it up! Popular causes for the engine not to fire up are kill switches left in “off” position and forgotten fuel taps. The float chamber(s) of your carburetor(s) have to fill up with gas so your starter will crank the engine for a while before it starts up. Engines with fuel injection on the other hand should fire up right away. If the starter seems to be too weak to properly crank the engine you can either use the kickstart lever (if there is one) or push-start the bike (if there is somebody to push you), but don’t push if your bike has a catalytic converter for this may damage or even destroy it.

Eingespritzte Motoren sollten dagegen sofort anspringen.

Jumpstarting the bike might be your last option and is easily done (if you have cables and a running vehicle engine handy): attach the red cable to the positive terminal of the dead battery, then to the positive terminal of the donor battery. The black cable goes to the negative connector of the donor battery and then to a ground connection on the receiving bike, basically a piece of bare metal. Keep the engine of the donor vehicle running and once your bike’s engine runs just remove the cables in reverse order.

With the engine running the year’s first ride can finally commence. It is not necessary to idle the engine until it warms up, actually this is harmful not only to the environment but also to your engine. So just start riding but take it easy in the beginning, your bike might still be a little stiff after all those months in the garage and your body and reflexes might be, too. After the test ride you should check the oil level and once again look at all the hoses and fluid reservoirs as well as tires and brakes. If everything is alright nothing should stand in the way between you, your bike and your first tour together.

Enjoy the ride!
