CCW 1902 - Canada West Tour

Sunday, September 15, 2019 | Arild Korstadhagen / Ted Goslinga | North and South America

From Vancouver to Osoyoos

Vancouver welcomed us with nice, warm weather.

Back in Vancouver for the start of the beautiful Canada West tour which bring us aong the most beautiful sceneries of British Columbia and Alberta !

Yesterday evening we had the welcome briefing and the handover from the touring bikes and a very nice welcome dinner at the hotel restaurant

Riding out of the busy traffic of Vancouver brought us after some hours already into  the stunning scenery around the Fraser river and via the Crowsnest highway into the warm and fertile Okanagan valley

We hit the 30 degrees Celsius today, so our first beer after the ride was very welcome

Great first riding day in this amazing country!

Morning briefing on the first riding day.
Time to go!
first coffee stop of the tour!
at Hope landslide
warm and fertile Okanagan Valley
Dinner at Walnut Beach Resort

From Osoyoos to Nelson

Such a nice morning in Osoyoos, but we have to get going.
Some pictures had to be taken at the view point above the lake.
First stop is a smal rail road museum along the way
(Those helmets are not part of the exhibition
In Greenwood village there is a very nice café that has to be visited.
Nelson at Kootenay lake

From Nelson to Vernon

What an awesome riding day we had today! The "bad" weather forecast turned out to be a full sunny , great riding day. Starting our day at the Kootenay lake , then heading north towards Kaslo for a superb coffee and a visit to SS Moyie, the last preserved paddle steamboat. Then riding further through amazing sceneries towards the town of Nakusp where we had a relaxed lunch at the lakesdie. After a ferry ride across upper arrow lake we did the last leg towards Vernon where we will stay overnight

Great riding day!!

Leaving Nelson - heading for Vernon !

From Vernon to Golden

Lot of stuff to see to day. The railway was and is important for Canada. It was built from both coasts. We made a stop at the place where the Pacific part met the Atlantic part.

From Golden via Lake Louise to Banff

A bit of a chilly start in the morning when we head out east over the Kicking Horse pass towards Lake louise. But the weather turned out to be better than expected so we mostly faced dry weather along the route.

Although not completely clear , we got some nice pictures of Lake Louise and Lake Moriana. After a short visit to Lake Louise village we headed down south towards the nice wintersport town of Bannf, where we had some free time to explore the city

Coming back from town we had a great dinner in a swiss-italian restaurant , served by a former cross country ski champion

All together a very nice day in the province of Alberta, Canada!

Golden was humid this morning.
Som road work caused a bit of a delay.

The bike took off to Lake Louise, while the van kept on towards Banff.
A bit overcast , but still a very photogenic Lake Louise!

From Banff via Jasper to Hinton

Waking up in Bannf and looking out of the window didnt look very good: dark and rain and bad forecast for the whole day. But when angels travel......although a bit nippy in the morning it cleared out soon and in the afternoon even the sun came through. And that s what we need when we are riding the Icelfields Parkway, since this is one of the most scenic routes in entire Canada: Lakes, Glaciers, beautiful mountain views, it's all there

Let the pictures slpeak for themselves!

Bow lake
Some roadwork to day also. Booooring, but good photo opportunity though.
We made a stop at the Athabasca Glacier in the Columbia ice fields, and had a nice little walk ut to the toe og the glacier.
...then there was some more road work going on (I digg having that tail after me!).
Later we parked together with some other recreational vehicles ant took a look at the Anthabasca falls.
We where not alone there, and it was a bit of a struggle to get enough space to take some decent pics to post on social media.

Restday in Hinton

A very nice and leisurely day it was! Everybody decided to ride on thier own or in small groups at their own pace and at their own time. So we explored quite some different area's all together today. Up to beautiful lakes, a hot spring, chasing wildlife or just go on a nice road

The evening we closed with a nice dinner in a chinese restaurant!

And last but not least: the weather improved again during the day....so far so good!

full moon over the Rockies
Euan overlooking the road from Pocahontas
the moose is loose!!

From Hinton to Kamloops

Long day today - 530 km. First stop was at the border where we left Alberta and entered British Columbia again. At the same time we gained an hour and went back to "Vancouver-time"
Unfortunately we got to see only half of the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies - Mt. Robson. The rest where hidden in the clouds.
Lunch with a view at the Paintet Turtle restaurant.
Dinner at the hotel i Kamloops...
...and birthday cake to a very fast riding 72-year old gentleman.

Happy birthday Larry !

From Kamloops back to Vancouver

.......and then suddenly the last day is already there again..!

But what a great riding day we had. 420 km almost all through canyons and valleys, passing lakes and sounds, riding great roads with a lot of twisties. What else do you need? Ok, a vit if a traffic jam when entering Vancouver suring rush hour, but that was quickly forgottwn when we had a pleasant farewell dinner with this great group of riders.

Thank you all for being on this tour. We enjoyed your company very much during these two weeks and we sincerely hope to see you again someday on any Edelweiss Tour! Ride safe!

Ted,
I almost met you and the group again in Osoyoos since I was camping in Rock Creek last week; 45 min. east of Osoyoos.
I hope you did not have any problems with the 'tar snakes' on the way up to the lookout point, it certainly takes away from the fun through the hairpins
Have a great tour, Kees Wijsman

We had no problems with the tar snakes up there, but weather was nice and dry last week, so a very good ride from Osoyoos!
Thanks for your message and maybe we will meet in Vancouver!! All the best

Hey you both,
I hope you have fun in Canada. Here in the Alps it was a super rainy day today and already snow in the mountains next to Warth. But we hope it will get better.
Greetings to everybody.

Thanks Claudia - we are doing just fine ! A little humid here as well, but no snow.

We do however meet some interesting pedestrians - a black bear crossed the road 100 meters in front of us this morning.

Enjoy the alps !
