Wonderful Adriatic Sea

Thursday, May 11, 2023 | Claudia Wodarz / Dominik Nattkamp | Europe

We have a blast on this tour with really enjoyable, great and funny company!

Croatia, Montenegro and Bosnia-Herzegovina are the countries we are riding on the next 9 riding Days. A great combination of spectacular costal roads, historical old towns, breathtaking landscapes and fascinating mountains we will enjoy it to the fullest to ride the best roads out here and explore the pearls of the Mediterranean.

Welcome to Split

We all made it to Split, Claudia and Dominik the Tourguides just brought the bikes to Split a few Tourmembers already arrived one day before and the rest of the group arrives at the afternoon the last two riders come right in time to our welcome briefing. Bad news first, the airline lost Jacks luggage with his riding gear and the shops for gear are closed today but luckily Dominik has the same size so he borrow his gear to Jack and he can start his vacation on this motorcycle trip.
After the welcome briefing and the motorcycle handover we have a fantastic dinner in the bbq restaurant right next to the hotel, it's way too much food for us but it was absolutley delicious and perfectly prepared in the smoker grill.

The excitement for the first riding day makes us going to bed early, so we start tomorrow we'll rested on our ride.

Riding Day 1 - Split to Hvar

It's time to leave Split and explore the wonderful Adriatic Sea, we ride on the coast road for the first hour and head then into the Cetina gorge the nature around it has mentioned as one of the most beautiful in the country and we can also agree to that, the turquoise Cetina river flows thru that canyon many olive trees and finest roads to ride up the mountain. From the mountains we get to the makarska riviera and enjoy the views to the crystal clear blue sea and ride along the coast again, we arrive in Drevenik where we buy our tickets to Sućuraj on the island Hvar.
It's also time for lunch and we have more then 1,5 hours to get on the ferry, we go to a nice traditional restaurant at the beach and let us taste the fresh and very good seafood.
A short ferry ride and we hop on the island Hvar, the longest island of Croatia and at the same time the island of deversity from pine forest to grapevine, rosemary, lavender and rocky seabeds it's heaven for explorers. As we have only one main road the group is free to ride on their own, and of course they love it the road offers nice curves, with wonderful colors along. So we meet all at a fixed point after 40 km of freeriding fill up the bikes and have a last stop at the napoleon fortress the ride up here is on a really narrow road with some tight curves but it's worth the awesome view over Hvar before we head to our Hotel and relax at the pool.

Riding Day 2 - Hvar to Dubrovnik

We leave the island Hvar today, but not on the fastest way we're having a stop first in Stari Grad for a coffee and walk in the beautiful old town. Today is the 1. of May and a random woman just handed Claudia a flower as a gift for this holiday what a lovely surprise. Stari Grad is the second largest city of Hvar and the oldest in Croatia founded in 384 BC by the Greeks.
As we have off-season and the ferry schedule is at noon we have enough time to take the chance for a olive oil tasting, we try different kinds of oils pure or flavored ones with bread, cheese, anchovies and also ice cream.
From here it's a 20 km ride to the ferry, we arrive 30 min befor departure to make sure to hop on this one, in this waiting time a very big motorcycle fan admires the bikes so we let the little boy sit on a couple of bikes with our helmets on, his mother tell us he learned the alphabet with motorcycle brands so it's moto love from birth.
We follow the coast road and ride on the Peljašak bridge it connects the south of Dalmatia with the rest of southern Croatia the bridge was finished in 2022 and avoids passing the only 20 km coastline of Bosnia and Herzegovina which always meant a boarder crossing. The lovely medieval town Ston is our stop for lunch we enjoy the view on the 5.5 km city wall from the 14. Century which is the longest defense wall of Europe, then we get also to see the Salt lakes we pass by and Ston reaches back of 2000 years in salt production.
But the highlight of riding starts in the afternoon, we leave the town on a very small road passing by the main road to Dubrovnik and the hole group is wondering why we not turn right when the sign says the city is in that direction

We ride up the mountain on a exciting narrow road with breathtaking views all around and many curves, there's no better way to end up the day!

Restday - Dubrovnik

Since it is raining today, the group decided to take a look at the World Heritage Site of Dubrovnik. With a guide we will take a tour of the city and learn a lot about the moving history of this pearl of the Adriatic. The city has the best preserved city wall in Europe. You can walk it completely. At a height of 25m, the 2km long wall surrounds the entire old town. From up here you have a great view of the sights of Dubrovnik. The day was concluded by a culinary highlight. The restaurant Nautika, where we were able to enjoy an excellent fish menu.

Riding Day 3 - Dubrovnik to Kotor

Today we drove in good weather from Dubrovnik to Kotor. Only about 90 km but with fantastic views of the Croatian coast and later after we passed the border on the coast of Montenegro. In a good mood we arrived at our today's hotel in Kotor and command the pool and the breathtaking location at this fjord of the Adriatic Sea. Kotor as a world heritage site holds a lot of sights for later and tomorrow. We are excited about this small historical city

Riding Day 4 - Kotor loop

The restday ride is only 150 km long but only on small narrow roads in the Lovčen nationalpark.
So first we ride up the mountain on 25 switchbacks with outstanding views all over around, we stop for a ice coffee because this place has today no electricity but what's always there is the awesome view from the stone terrace. The elevation of the mountains around are up to 1750 meters so the temperatures are a bit cooler, the nationalpark is 6220 hectares large and we're lucky and have no traffic today.

We leave the main road Cetinje to a tiny single track road sourrounded by green rocky mountains and curves without an end, it's so peaceful and nice and the best escape from "real life". At a nice little stand we enjoy homemade pomegranate juice with a beautiful view to the bay, before we leave the owner brings us some local sweets prepared extra for us so we're not only having a taste of this local dish also of the great Montenegran hospitality.

After lunch we're riding on the old main road up on the mountains with wider curves so we can Fasten up on that part. In Budva we stop for a coffee right in time befor it starts raining, luckily it's only a 15 min shower so we can continue the ride without getting wet from above.

It was an insanely great day on Montenegros tiny roads

Riding Day 5 - Kotor to Mostar

In the best weather we start from Kotor in Montenegro to Mostar in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Empty roads allow us to move forward quickly. A super nice restaurant in the middle of nowhere offers us very good coffee and strengthened we head for lunch. A short photostop at a 2300 year old castle and we are already in Mostar.

Riding Day 5 - Mostar to Zadar

First step today riding up the Hum Hill on 465m with the millennium cross on top of it, it's turned to the Christian side of Mostar and is the sign for 2000 years of Christianity. From here we have a great view over Mostar and the mountains around, on the small road we ride down to the mainroad where we will ride for the first stretch.
After coffee we switch to ultra small local road, and so we explore the country side of Bosnia.

For lunch we need to ride on a short gravel road which ends up on grass, and there at the lake is already Dominik waiting for us with a lovely prepared picnic.
Around the corner is the border of Croatia, the crossing is easy and fast so we continue the ride. And because it's more interesting we ride again on tiny roads in the middle of nowhere, sometimes is nothing around and like from nothing small villages showing up and we get a feeling about how people live here.

For the last 50 km we ride along the coast where we have more traffic before we arrive at our destination Zadar.

Riding Day 6 - Zadar to Velebit & coastroad loop

Four satisfied riders arrived back at the hotel. With pure sun we circumnavigated the Velebit mountains. We enjoyed a great lunch and a well-deserved ice cream. After we have mastered enthusiastically the Magistrale. One of the most beautiful coastal roads in Europe.

Riding Day 6 - Zadar to Krka loop

Enzo, Jose and Claudia ride to the Krka nationalpark first directly on the highway to Skradin. At the parking we were already prepared for changing from our riding gear to regular clothes, with a coffee in our hands we head to the boat which brings us directly to the entrance of the park. Immediately after a short walk we arrive at the Rośki slap the magnificent main waterfall.

This lush green park filled with magical cascades is truly a wonder. We walk around on the paths and enjoy this calming and refreshing sourrounding.
We ride thru the Krka canyon back to Skradin and enjoy lunch in the heart of the little port town.
We ride back to Zadar on small curvy roads to the Hotel where the rest of the group already awaits us at the pool area.

Riding Day 7 - Zadar to Split

On our last riding day we ride from Zadar back to Split. But not on the highway but on small and smallest road. As a surprise Claudia served us a great picknick at one of the best places you can imagine. Directly at a beautiful waterfall. Everyone is less than thrilled that this wonderful tour is already over. But after the tour is before the tour.
