Discover the highest reaches of the Alps – and some of the most spectacular mountain passes on earth!

The AMA Alps Challenge covers the 40 highest passes of the Alps, and Part II has nine of them in store for you. In addition, there are more than a dozen smaller and lesser-known passes lined up along our route, as well as picturesque little towns, imposing castles, and numerous sights and attractions. You’ll even get to ride with AMA Editorial Director Mitch Boehm and some of the AMA Brass, too.

The first challenge starts in Erding, Germany, a town just east of Munich, and heads south into Austria, smack dab into some of the most spectacular mountains on earth.

From there we’ll head further south to the medieval town of Lienz, Austria, and a day later into beautiful Collalbo. From there it’s on to Livigno, Italy, and the amazing Dolomites for a day of rest (or more riding!), and then we’ll head to the Ötztal, Austria, before riding north again toward Munich.

Along the way we’ll traverse 17 of the most epic passes on earth, through Austria, Italy and Switzerland, and have a blast doing it! You’ll not only do some of best riding of your life (and probably learn a lot along the way), you’re likely to meet some lifelong friends, as well. After a long day of riding, ‘Edelweiss Evenings’ are famous for their good times, great food and drink, and even better memories, and you’ll collect plenty.

Part 2 of the challenge starts in Milan, Italy’s second-largest city. Its two major airports make it easy to reach, and its proximity to the Alps guarantees plenty of riding fun from the start. Still, Milan is worth an extra day or two, so try to arrive a little earlier and enjoy this fabulous city!

From Milan, we head straight into Switzerland (don’t take “straight” literally!) to find the first members of that illustrious “Club of 40”. Around the town of Andermatt, half a dozen major passes with more than 150 hairpin turns are waiting for you and your motorcycle, and in order to really savor each and every one of them we’re going to spend a rest day in picturesque Andermatt.

Then we head to France, to Chamonix, an old and famous resort town located at the foot of spectacular Mont Blanc. We’ll circle around the highest mountain of the Alps and along the way collect two more major passes and a handful of smaller ones, which are just as spectacular to ride. After one night in Aosta, Italy, we return to Milan.

The final part starts at the French Riviera in Nice, the deep blue ocean and vibes will give you an immediate sense of the savoir-vivre. The city itself is worth an extra day or two, it gives you the ability not just to see this amazing place but also to settle into the European time difference.

As soon as we´re off, we´ll head north and will soon cross the border with Italy, ticking off the first passes of the tour we´ll spend the night in a typical picturesque mountain village. In the next few days we´ll switch from the Italian to the French side several times. You tell us what side is more beautiful!

We´ll reach the most northern point of the tour, just a little south of Chamonix, where we´ll spend time in the Alps Challenge II. On our way back we´ll stay in the French Alps and we´re pretty sure you can´t keep count of the switchbacks you ride everyday. Passing the popular skiing area of Valloire and several Tour de France passes will give you the best motorcycle riding ever!
