4AE2005 Alps Extreme

Thursday, September 24, 2020 | Angela | Europe

YES!!! Riding, riding, and more riding... Being out there touring on the motorcycle again feels like a fish back in the water. And the Alps seem to be twice as beautiful to us

Day 1 : Mieming - Fiss (Austria)

Despite the low clouds and the low temperatures we were able to enjoy the magnificent views over the valley Inn
The first highlight of the day was the ride down with the Alpine Coaster in Imst. At a length of 3.5 kms it is the longest Coaster in Europe.
Like the rest of us, Kalle and Jaap had a lot of fun riding the Alpine Coaster
Today's second attraction was the ride up the Kaunertaler Glacier. Beautiful scenery everywhere.
Karsten on his way up
Chris and Jaap at the glacier's top station
Manfred and his beautiful 1250 GSA were dancing up the mountain
Karsten had a blast, too
Best friends Chris and Jaap from Holland

Day 2 : Fiss - Penegal (Italy)

The "Queen of Passes" was to be tackled today - Stelvio Pass. Every rider in the group enjoyed a good and flowing ride up the mountain on this brisk sunny morning
Important briefing material
Having arrived on top of Stelvio, we all gloried in that we have mastered the challenging ride.
Bormio is a stop-over city located between Stelvio pass and Gavia pass
Hummm... I could tell you that this is the sign to indicate that you have reached the top of Gavia pass... Would you believe it?
It seems Kalle has spent too much time sitting on the motorcycle... he didn't want to sit down for lunch
The stunning landscapes of Gavia pass
In the afternoon we reach our hotel on the Penegal - at the end of a short but windy side road high up over the Bozen valley. The views and the colours the setting sun creates on the mountains are breathtaking

Day 3 : Penegal - Levico Terme

Our third day starts with a loop north of Bolzano before we leave South Tyrol and head towards the Trento area
Our coffee stop is a cosy place with a beautiful garden. It is hard to leave the nice place, but of course, the roads are calling us
Our route takes us to the Lago di Molveno.
A very scenic spot with the Brenta mountain range in the background.
At the end of the day we tackle the Monte Boldone with its racetrack-like curves

Day 4 : Rest day in Levico Terme

As challenging as our day ended yesterday, as challenging starts our rest day's ride to the Lake Garda.
The "Kaiserjägersteig" is a very short one, but it ranks among the most challenging roads to ride.
The name "Kaiserjägersteig" is derived from the Austrian soldiers, the "Kaiserjäger", whose task was to protect the borders of the Austrian-Hungarian kingdom. In the 1870s they created a foot path up the mountain to guarantee the supply of ammunition. Today, of course, the road has been turned in an asphalted road.
On our ride to Lake Garda, we pass by the great Castel Beseno.
We are in Italy - so, of course, it had to be a typical Italian cappuccino. For some, though, it had to be a chocolata calda.
The area around Trento and around the Lake Garda is known for its large vineyards.
Arriving at Lake Garda.
Why the "shudder terrace" has this name? Well, you don't need to think much about this. A look will tell.

Day 5 : Levico Terme - Toblach

Leaving the purely Italian area again, we are headed back north, approaching the Dolomites - a motorcyclist's paradise.
Even though it is late season in the year - as long as it won't snow, you should always expect "oncoming traffic"
Chris - on top of Manghen Pass
A narrow road, tight corners, steep uphill in parts, beautiful nature around you - that's the way we like it
Karsten and the Dolomites in the background
Who said a full day riding in the Dolomites would be a relaxing day...?
On top of Staulanza Pass
Passo di Giau is always a highlight, riding-wise as well as the scenery you get to ride in.
The icing on the cake today was the spectacular view over the Dolomites from our hotel high up the mountain

Day 6 : Toblach - Mieming (Austria)

Another spectacular morning view sends us off into our last riding day. Today we leave Italy again and return back to Austria and our base hotel.
It seems Kalle and Karsten can't get enough of riding in the Dolomites
Karsten finally found the perfect magnet - the Edelweiss flower
A last look over the Timmelsjoch and we are on the final leg of our beautiful Alps Extreme Tour.

Alps extreme is not sightseeing, but that's what the name says...still, Angela knows how to bring her troop to a stop there whenever it's really worth it.

Hi Daisy & James,
How lovely to receive your comment, I am happy to hear from you.
Oh yes, it was a fantastic tour. The weather was just perfect for the rides, the scenery was amazing, and the fellow riders were wonderful travel companions. We had a great time.
It would have been the icing on the cake if the two of you had been with us. We will be getting there again, I am sure.
My kindest regards to you, Angela
