World Tour // Section South America: Cartagena - Punta Arenas 1BP

Argentina   |  Bolivia   |  Chile   |  Colombia   |  Ecuador   |  Peru

More of everything: nature, culture, adventure and curves, curves, curves!

South America from top to bottom - ride your bike to the end of the world!

We start in Cartagena and ride along one of the most famous roads in the world, the Panamericana! Stretching 26,000 km from north to south we will tackle about 4,000 km over the course of the next few weeks. Colombia, a country that only recently surfaced from years of turmoil, welcomes us with open arms and an enchanting beauty that belies its years of conflict, even in cities like Medellin and Cali. Having crossed the first frontier, it’s time to wind our way through the jungle of Ecuador across the circle of latitude that gives it its name. In Peru, we zigzag between the mighty Andes and the Pacific coast as we continue south. The next three weeks are packed with highlights: we start with worlds best Ceviche in Lima, head past the dunes of Ica to the world-famous Nazca Lines – where we will of course take the opportunity to view them from the air – and ride some of the best motorcycle roads in the world across the Andes to the lost city of Machu Picchu. Every day brings something new: the Incan capital of Cuzco, Los Uros, the floating islands of Puno and the town of Copacabana on Lake Titicaca. From here we enter Bolivia and ride onto high plains of the Altiplano as we make our way to La Paz, the highest capital in the world. This fascinating country contains the unbelievable Ruta de la Muerta, a MUST-DO for any serious biker (good weather only) as well the Salar de Uyuni, the largest salt lake on the planet, which we will tackle on a special rest day. 50 Our route takes us along the Atacama Desert and through the Andes into Argentina. After riding along the southern edge of Gran Chaco we cross the spectacular Los Caracoles and head straight for the vibrant capital of Chile, Santiago. After taking a well-deserved rest day we point our bikes towards the South, but not without a quick side trip to Valparaiso. This picturesque town, one of the most important harbours before the opening of the Panama Canal, offers us a chance to soak up some seaside flair. Continuing at sea level with the Pacific coast on our right we head out onto the magical Carretera Austral. Endless twisties take us into the Chilean rainforest and back into the Andes, which will cross multiple times over the next few weeks. At long last: Patagonia! Spectacular scenery and untouched nature will be our companions from now on as we continue south. One of the least populated areas in the world (less than one inhabitant per square kilometre) Patagonia contains breath-taking landscapes such as the Perito Moreno Glacier and Torres del Paine National Park, which are sure to leave us in awe of nature’s beauty. From here on it´s just a few days’ ride to Ushuaia and, quite literally, the end of the road. It’s time to head back north and as we tackle the last miles to Punto Arenas, we can’t but reflect on all we have experienced on this trip through some of the world’s most spectacular landscapes and cultures.
