Adriatic Rollercoaster Extreme (4SC2202) - Over the mountains, to the sea... and back!

Dienstag, 13. September 2022 | Wim Doms / Harald Pramhofer | Europa

Welcome - Willkommen - Bienvenido - Dobrodosli !

You just know things are about to get very interesting when this kind of line-up starts developing...
And you know they will get even more interesting once our ever-happy enthusiastic Dave gets to sit on his brand new GS for the week.
Some take a bit more time to study... And wonder where all that luggage is going to fit (and no, before you make any judgment, it was not necessarily the lady this time All got sorted and found a place on the bikes.
After Welcome Briefing, time to go out for a delicious dinner in Klagenfurt city centre. Oh and euhm... this may be an Extreme motorcycle tour, but that doesn't stop us from...
... having dinner in a bit of a luxurious setting !

Day 1 - Klagenfurt to Motovun - Over the mountains we go !

Time to go ! Seems like a Belgian tour guide is having strong feelings about that
And seems that brothers Nico and Xavier are just as happy ! (and awake, right, Nico?
Within the next hour and on top of Loiblpass, our groups passed into Slovenia!
Tiny Slovenian backroads bring us to a few amazing hidden views - exactly what an Edelweiss-tour is all about !
All those curves and concentration ask for a little moment to relax sometime. Georg said: powernap-time !
And when you think that after a full day of riding, all challenges are behind you, the tiny historic town of Motovun throws you one last curveball. "Just go up the main street", they said. Main streets don't look this in other parts of the world
For those of you who were wondering what the local delicacy here is...

Day 2 - Restday in, around, by and on the Adriatic

When Motovun says good morning, it does it in style ! Feeling like we were above the clouds, we did. And well, we actually were.
Restdayride around Istria, so what else to do than get close to the sea. And how better to do that than to go catch a ferry (JUST in time), Maite thought.
Benzin gab's in der Marina
The other part of the group preferred to look at the Adriatic from above, to get the best (and VERY blue) views.
But one way or the other, Istria always delivers when it comes to seafood.
Our happy bunch of Dominicans by the Adriatic
And our happy Swiss rider Andreas getting in the last pictures of the day.
And German rider Georg agreed: Motovun is very picturesque

Day 3 - Motovun to Plitvice - Bye bye Adriatic, welcome curvy backroads !

One last view over our wonderful little town and off we go. Bye bye Motovun !
Two groups, ten minutes apart. See those dark skies? Those ten minutes made all the difference between one very wet, and one perfectly dry group
In the afternoon though, dry roads would await us all again. Isel couldn't wait to ride out of Senj and go explore some more.
We didn't hear Sergio complain about the dry roads either, over the roar of his Yamaha triple. Here he comes heading into Velebit national park.
Last views over the Adriatic. Well... for most of us. Kregg liked it so much he actually enjoyed it more than 100 kms extra ! No worries, we eventually heard his S 1000 XR coming back in the right direction
Vergnügungsfahrt
One of the most diverse tours ever. Not even 30 minutes after waving goodbye to the blue sea, we're in a whole other world again. Amazing Croatia !

Day 4 - A restday full of lakes, rides, nice food, and... runways !

Motorcycles we know how to ride. But today our guests went out on very different means of transport. Plitvice Lakes National Park is a sight to behold, and there really is no better way to do it than do actually get ON the lakes. No motorcycles, but a little boat allowed us to do exactly that !
Our happy bunch from Dominican Republic know all about water. This time a lake instead of an ocean, but they got along perfectly well.
Steve and Maite actually went in full posing mode
But then Raoul and Isel said: we can top that !
Chris and Mike, our two Texan friends, they don't pose. They catwalk.
Hey but hang on a minute... Are there old DC3 aircraft hidden in a lake?
There aren't... But turns out that close to our hotel, a true hidden treasure was awaiting us. An abandoned Yuguslavian airforce base, right on the border with Bosnia-Herzegovina, provided part of the group with some truly unique bike-picture-opportunities
Kiko decided he could be a DC3 captain. And well, being Kiko, he just did
Sergio, always very precise, went to investigate the inside of this historic machine to the very last detail.
Dave doesn't need wings to fly when he's taking off on the runway
A very intriguing and historic place it is, and we were very priviliged to experience it with part of our group.
Very special atmosphere, and a place full of modern history and astonishing engineering.
More history on the way back to the hotel. The ruins of the old castle in Dreznik make a perfect picture stop to end an amazing (and again extremely diverse) rollercoaster-day.

Day 5 - Plitvice to Novo Mesto - Back to Slovenia. Well, Slorainia, for a little while

Heading north in Croatia, in the interesting little town of Plaski, the Serbian Orthodox priest was kind enough to open up the ancient church for our group.
Kiko then made a tourguide's mom very happy by lighting a little candle there. Just for good luck and safe travels, but it means a lot. See, these Ducati Monster-tamers, they do have a soft side
And then it was time to go enjoy our last Croatian lunch on this Rollercoaster. Our Dominican friends found a unique place by the river and... looked happy as always !
The rest of the group went VERY local and found this lamb on a spit. Can't get any more Croatian, and it looks a bit of a fright sometimes. But extremely delicious !
Views along the hidden roads of northern Croatia aren't exactly horrible. No tourist traffic around these parts, but we wouldn't exactly call it dry-weather-guaranteed...
Still... worth a stop and a little look around
And as always: rain eventually ends and allowed part of the group to enjoy the warming (and drying) sunshine over coffee, on the banks of the Krkna river.
So quiet and picturesque. Great to be back in Slovenia.

Day 6 - Novo Mesto to Klagenfurt - Back over the Alps to home base

Our last riding day... We'll miss these kinds of views as of tonight.
And we'll miss these too... Little snack, anyone?
Riding back into the Alps makes up for any sad feelings about this being our last riding day. Sneaking in through Austria's back door comes with some amazing views...
... and some amazing roads !
Steve and Maite
mit den Wölfen reiten
The last few miles of the tour then got very, VERY wet, so camera's staid hidden and dry in our cases. But what better way to end a rollercoaster than with the image of the people who made it such a wonderful tour? Thanks ever so much to the lovely people that made this Adriatic Rollercoaster not just Extreme, but extreme-ly friendly, funny, warm and cosy ! Safe travels back home and hope to see you again !
